Dr. Jean S. Gearon is a licensed clinical psychologist in Maryland and the District of Columbia.  While an expert in the treatment of PTSD and other trauma related issues and disorders she works extensively with people suffering from depression, anxiety, and eating disorders.

Dr. Gearon utilizes an integrative approach to therapy and pulls from different theories and evidenced based practices to tailor her work to meet the individual style, needs and goals of her clients. Therapy is considered  a collaborative process of self-discovery that is both supportive and directive.  To inform her work, Dr. Gearon draws from three areas of theoretical research: attachment theory, cognitive-behavioral theory, and neuroscience as, in her opinion, these three areas of research help us to understand how and why therapy works.

To facilitate the therapeutic process, Dr. Gearon strives to create an atmosphere that is judgment-free; an environment in which people feel safe to explore what patterns of behavior and thought are and are not working in their lives and why. Once this understanding is achieved, strategies are developed collaboratively to help individuals move past these road blocks.

As many problems seem to arise from either escalating emotions or avoiding emotions, time is often spent in session identifying and exploring emotions.  A deeper understanding of emotions facilitates the development of more effective coping strategies. Skills such as mindfulness meditation, guided imagery and cognitive-behavioral techniques (CBT) are evidenced base strategies that Dr. Gearon finds enormously effective in helping people regulate their emotions.

Dr. Gearon considers her work as an honor and privilege and strives to be attentive, flexible, genuine and non-judgmental. Please feel free to contact her if you have questions about her practice, the use of guided imagery or want to discuss anything further with me that might be helpful in making your decision.

Her practice is located in the Foggy Bottom/West End area of Washington, DC.
