First Contact 

 Dr. Gearon finds it is often helpful to speak briefly on the phone to get a sense of what your needs are.  She is also comfortable being contacted by email.  Please see the Contact section of this website for her contact information. 

Initial Consultation

Dr. Gearon uses the first two sessions as an initial consultation for both of you.  She encourages you to see this as an opportunity, with no strings attached, to learn more about her and her style of therapy in order to determine if you feel comfortable working with her. Empirical research demonstrates clearly that positive outcome in psychotherpy is positively correlated with theraputic alliance.  Thus is very important that you feel comfortable with the therapist you choose. 

 During these two sessions, Dr. Gearon will review her practices regarding therapy, confidentiality, and payment.  She feels it is important for you to understand what you are both agreeing to, should you decide to work together.  Dr. Gearon also gathers information about what you hope to get from therapy and your personal history.  This information helps her understand you more deeply, and for the two of you to formulate plans for therapy together that meet your needs.  

 After the first two sessions, you both will decide whether working together is the best approach, given your goals and comfort level.  If you decide to work together, you will schedule regular psychotherapy sessions.  If not, referrals to other providers in the community who may be able to help will be offered to you.
